On Tuesday, our Year 12 Students chose some really creative outfits for Valedictory Dress-Up Day. They also enjoyed a fabulous breakfast prepared by our Café and school staff, which was served by our 2025 Prefects.
Issue 11 - 2024
From the Principal
YEAR 12 VALEDICTORY WEEK
We began Valedictory Week with a Year 12 Eucharist held at St George’s Cathedral in Perth. We were delighted to welcome The Venerable Peter Boyland, Archdeacon Assisting and ASC Board Member, who gave the homily.
On Thursday, our Year 12 Students enjoyed a wonderful day at Rottnest, enjoying each other’s company for the final time before Valedictory Day.
Our Valedictory Day on Friday was filled with very special memories for our graduating students. We started the day with the ceremonial tree planting in our Year 12 Avenue of Trees. This was followed by our Valedictory Assembly, during which we acknowledged our Veteran students who have been with us for 14 years. We also presented all of our Year 12s with graduation certificates and gifts.
Our traditional Walk of Honour walk was a very special highlight.
We completed the day with a beautiful dinner at the Ritz-Carlton in Perth in the evening.
2025 PREFECTS
I am delighted to announce our School Prefects for 2025.
It is a great honour to be entrusted with these positions of leadership. With the honour, however, comes responsibility. All of these students will be expected to be excellent role models for our entire school community. We look forward to their leadership next year and feel confident that they will fulfil their roles admirably.
R U OK? DAY WHOLE SCHOOL LAPATHON
R U OK? Day is a National Day of Action when we are reminded to ask, ‘Are you OK?’ and start a meaningful conversation.
We recognised R U OK? Day with a Whole School buddy activity where Secondary students spent time with their buddies in the Primary School, engaging in important conversations and taking part in an R U OK? Lapathon. This was a wonderful event that really brought our community together in a positive and meaningful way. You can watch a short video of our Lapathon here.
TERM 3 EXCELLENCE CERTIFICATES
Congratulations to Students and Staff who were presented with an EXCELLENCE Certificate for Term 3.
These certificates recognised those who have upheld our whole school theme of EXCELLENCE by: Doing Their Best; Learning From Their Mistakes; Being Proud of Their Achievements.
CAMPUS DEVELOPMENTS UPDATE
- Work on Building 10A (7 classroom block) is progressing according to plan and we are on track to move into this building in December this year.
- The concrete pour has now finished for Building 10 and the limestone retaining wall has commenced. We are on track to move into this building in December 2025.
- Furniture in the Building 6 Open Area has been replaced during the school holidays with colourful, easy-to-move tables and chairs that will be ideal for small group work.
- Bright acoustic panels have been fitted to the ceiling of our new Dance Studio to complete this wonderful new facility.
WACSSA CROSS COUNTRY
Well done to our students from Years 2-6 who participated in the WACSSA Cross Country Carnival.
They put their endurance, fitness and mental fortitude to the test against 17 other WACSSA schools. SVACS came 3rd overall which was an incredible result and shows that all the training our students have been doing has paid off. Congratulations to Cooper Hurlbatt (Year 2) who came 2nd in his race, Paige Jones (Year 3), Manveer Singh (Year 6) and Jayden Darkwa who came 3rd in their races. Congratulations to our Primary School Athletes.
JUNIOR YEARS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Years 3-6 students had an excellent day at the Junior Years Athletics Carnival. Our athletes ran, jumped and threw their way through the day, and it was fantastic to see so many students trying their absolute hardest and demonstrating the techniques that they have been developing in HPE classes.
Waylen truly stood out, showing unmatched enthusiasm and earning the House Spirit Cup. Stirling achieved an impressive milestone by winning their third consecutive House Shield for being the winning House overall! Congratulations to all students for their hard work, progress, and determination throughout the year. Well done to all of our Champions!
FUTURE ENROLMENTS 2025 and 2026
Enrolments for 2025 are well underway. Interviews for future applications occur approximately 18 months prior to the year of entry. Some year groups are already full or very close to being full.
If you have not already done so, please submit application forms for future students by contacting our Registrar, Mrs Merri Corr on 9297 9506 or by email enrolments@svacs.wa.edu.au.
WITHDRAWALS
We have already started organising our timetables, classes and staffing for 2025. To enable us to offer the optimal teaching and learning opportunities for our students, it is important that we have a complete picture of our enrolments for next year.
We understand that this is also a time of year when some families may be considering moving out of the area as job opportunities arise, or other family circumstances change.
To assist with our planning for 2025, we would appreciate families advising us as soon as possible of any future student withdrawals. This will also enable us to offer any available places to families on our waitlist.
Please also take into consideration the school policy for student withdrawals:
One full term’s notice in writing is required of your intention to withdraw a student.
This means that you must give at least 10 school weeks’ notice of any withdrawals (a school week is defined as a week during school term time—not school holidays).
If you do not give sufficient notice, you are required to pay a term’s fees in lieu of notice.
We receive many requests from parents leaving the school to waive the late withdrawal fee, which is a standard charge and standard practice in independent schools in Western Australia. To be fair to all our parents, and to keep our fees as low as possible, we must adhere to the policy of enforcing the late withdrawal fee for all students.
Addressed to the Principal (Ms Melissa Powell), a withdrawal notice should be sent via email to enrolments@svacs.wa.edu.au .
If any of your children will not be returning to SVACS in 2025, the school must receive written notice of your intention before Wednesday 9 October 2024.
Thank you for your assistance in helping us with our planning for 2025.
SVACS STARS
NOAH BROWN
Year 10 Student Noah Brown has dedicated most of his life to honing and refining his skills in the emerging sport of Ninja Obstacle Racing. After winning the very first Youth Ninja Competition held in Western Australia at just 8 years of age, Noah’s rise in the sport has been astronomical.
In 2024, Noah has been crowned Australian Ninja Games (ANG) National Champion for the Under 13 Division and the Ninja Challenge League Western Australia State Champion for the Teen Division.
His most impressive Ninja accomplishments, however, have come on the Intercontinental and International stage. This year, Noah was awarded 3rd place and a Bronze Medal in the World Ninja Athlete Games (WNAG) for the Under 13 Division. This was his first ever podium for an International Competition!
In July 2024, he competed in the Asia Obstacle Sports Championship in Malysia in the Open Adult Male Category. Noah made it all the way to the Gold Medal Race where he was awarded 2nd place and his first ever International Silver Medal.
In September, Noah once again headed to Malaysia to compete in the Open Adult Division of the O-Zone Games Ninja Competition. After two days of intense competition, Noah had an outstanding run in the final stage and was crowned O-Zone Games, Open Adult Male Champion!
SETHMI AND MAYON PERERA
Congratulations to Sethmi Perera (Year 6) and Mayon Perera (Year 4) who recently travelled to Malaysia to compete at the Classic International Taekwondo Championship. Sethmi and Mayon achieved fantastic results, both winning gold medals! Their club also won Overall Champion Club. Well done!
COOPER CHILMAN
Cooper Chilman (Year 6) has been selected to represent Western Australia in the 2024 Cricket 12s Boys Championship. This competition takes place in Adelaide later in the year. Congratulations Cooper on this great honour!
INDIGO GREEVES
Congratulations to Indigo Greeves (Year 5) who won first place in the WA Junior Gymanistics Championships (Level 4 Girls) for individual trampoline. She achieved this through great dedication and hard work.

CHAPLAIN'S NEWS
In this ‘ordinary’ season, the church asks us to read from the teachings of Jesus as found in the Gospels. Each week in Chapel, we reflect on the message of one of these readings, and consider how it might speak to us today.
The set readings for the Sunday at the start of the week always give us a relevant ‘word in season’ connecting our school themes, values and Anglican Identity.
The colour of the season is green, and this represents our potential growth in faith and understanding, of God, of ourselves and of each other as we live and work together in community.
This week, we hear Jesus in the Gospel challenging the worldly view of greatness. Power, authority, fame, wealth and influence may be used to judge greatness in the secular and political worlds.
Two of his disciples ask for greatness – to be granted seats next to him in heaven, to be seen as the elite among the disciples. Jesus says that if they want to be great, they must be servants to others – to put others before themselves. Greatness, Jesus says, is about the extent to which you have served, washed people’s feet, welcomed the stranger, comforted the lost, brought new hope and faith to the lost and broken. It’s not about you, but what you have done for others.
Greatness, or excellence, in the Christian sense, is not about being first, top or the winner. When we celebrate excellence in school, we try to recognize those who, while not necessarily achievers in the traditional sense, have tried to overcome their obstacles, have looked outside themselves, have shown compassion or empathy.
Perhaps we have got greatness wrong: the great leaders who preside over war, famine, poverty, the great institutions that profit and corrupt, abuse and manipulate, the great inventions and achievements that have changed the climate of our world.
God in Christ challenges us to reevaluate greatness. Christ himself, with the true greatness of God, comes among us as a baby, a child in danger from a great earthly king. Jesus’ actions, teachings, life, death and resurrection teach us that Christ “came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life to set us free.” We too can be great, excellent, if we are prepared to put others before ourselves.
Fr Toby
School Chaplain
Servant God, who left the greatness of your throne in heaven to rescue the world, help me to be a servant too. Jesus, who honoured the dishonoured by washing feet and showed love by serving his disciples, help me to bring dignity to the disgraced and to show love in my actions. Give me eyes to see and ears to hear, and courage and compassion to follow where you lead. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

PRIMARY NEWS
A Fabulous Start to Term 4!
Term 4 has commenced well and the staff and students are commended for the smooth start. We have a long lineup of exciting events this term and I look forward to seeing families at them.
The Year 5 students had a fabulous time at their camp at Swan Valley Adventure Centre where they had the opportunity to stretch themselves in new ways. The camp provided them the opportunity to grow their team and leadership skills. Congratulations to the Year 5 team of students and staff!
The Early Years Carnival was very exciting for all students from Kindergarten to Year 2.
The beautiful weather shone through, and the students participated extremely well. Thank you to the families who came along to support and cheer on our students. A special mention goes to Mr Jordan D’Andrilli who organised the carnival and to all the Early Years staff and Secondary students who helped it run smoothly on the day.
AROUND THE CLASSROOMS
As always there has been a lot happening in the Primary School. Here are some snippets from across the year levels.
Pre-Kindergarten students enjoyed a fun start to Term 4. They have been learning about ocean animals and experimenting with growing vegetables in water
Kindergarten students had a wonderful time enjoying their first-ever sports carnival. They practised their sprint running skills each day and made sure they pumped their arms and looked straight ahead leading up to the carnival. At the carnival, there were so many smiles and laughter as they tried very hard to keep the egg balanced on their spoons for the egg and spoon race and the focus in their eyes as they tried their best at the accuracy activities. The highlight of the afternoon was racing against their mums and dads in the 50m sprint
Pre-Primary students have been having fun learning about forces. There are two main forces; push and pull. A push moves something away from you and a pull moves something closer to you. As an introduction, the students were challenged to identify the force used in everyday activities
Year 1 students have been learning about objects, their materials, and their properties. They have been exploring how objects can be changed by stretching, twisting and bending them. The students have been collaborating to explore these materials, including playing a stretching relay, where we tested how much different materials stretch.
Year 2 students had an amazing time at the Early Years Sports Carnival in Week 2. They enjoyed participating in sprints, cheering each other on from the sidelines, and showing incredible sportsmanship. The Year 2 students were thrilled to play a rotation of different games, interacting with some wonderful Secondary School volunteers. The day was filled with enthusiasm, kindness to each other, and lots of smiling faces.
Year 3 students have been learning that the Earth rotates on its axis, causing day and night as different parts of the planet face the Sun. They also discovered that the reason for the seasons is due to the Earth’s tilt and orbit around the Sun. All three classes have loved acting out the rotation, revolution and the Earth’s orbit in front of the class.
Year 4 - On Wednesday in Week 2, the Year 4 classes had the opportunity to go on an excursion to the Shipwreck Museum in Fremantle. Everyone had a great time learning about the Dutch explorers who made contact with Australia in the 17th century and exploring the exciting exhibits.
Year 5 students were welcomed back to school for the beginning of Term 4, before being whisked away to Camp at Swan Valley Adventure Centre. Team building and leadership were at the forefront of everyone’s mind, and not to forget, time to hang out with their friends. The students displayed inclusivity and resilience throughout their time there.
Year 6 students were able to consolidate their understanding of Natural Disasters as they presented their information report to their peers. The students focused on their speaking and listening skills, working towards excellence in the presentation of their work.
Digital Technologies - Students in Year 1 are learning to present their work digitally. In groups, students divide a known story into individual parts. Using Paint 3D, students draw and type their page of the story. The stories will then be printed into a class book for all students to enjoy. Students in Year 2 have started their new digital project this week. They are using data to create a poster in Publisher to reflect the survey question, “What is the Year 2 students’ favourite pet?” Students will create a graph and a poster reflecting the results.
Physical Education - What an exciting time it has been for our Year 1 and 2 students at the Early Years Sports Carnival! They truly shone as they showcased the skills they had developed in their HPE classes. The young athletes demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, embracing the theme of ‘try your best, forget the rest!’ They learned valuable lessons about winning and losing, making the event a celebration of teamwork and fun.
Our Year 3 students have started Term 4 learning about tee-ball and developing their fundamentals of throwing, catching and striking. Meanwhile, the Year 4 students are diving into volleyball for the first time. The Year 5 students are focusing on understanding game rules and experiencing the roles of an umpire. Lastly, our Year 6 students are wrapping up the year with a focus on invasion games, starting with ultimate frisbee, where they are refining their skills in both attacking and defending space.
Italian – There has been a lot of fun and excitement at the beginning of Term 4 in our Italian classrooms! While the Year 3 and 4 students have been busy describing in Italian their pets and daily routine, the Year 2 students enjoyed performing the Role-play “Dal Dottore” (The Doctor). The children experimented with the vocabulary and phrases learned about body parts and ailments and performed a variety of exhilarating role-plays for their classmates.
Visual Art - The Primary art room is buzzing with excitement as students finish projects ready for the upcoming art exhibition in week 4. The Year 1 students are applying the final additions to their Eric Carle inspired sea turtle paintings by printing bubbles on them and Year 5 are busy glossing their giant animal eyes and painting in the textural details. Behind the scenes, Mrs Jenzen is busy framing and naming all the artwork. Opening night for exhibiting students is Tuesday 29th October 5-7 pm in the MPH and the exhibition remains open for viewing as follows:
- Wednesday 30th October at 8 am – 7pm
- Thursday 31st October at 8 am – 7pm

SECONDARY NEWS
Philosothon
This year, both familiar and new faces from SVACS participated in the Philosothon at the University of Western Australia. The Philosothon encourages school students to investigate ethical and philosophical questions in the context of ‘communities of inquiry’. Our students used higher-order thinking and communication skills to discuss ageism, the idea of inserting chips into human brains to utilise artificial intelligence and perception, with students from Perth’s top schools. The team represented SVACS admirably, with a couple of students narrowly missing out on a podium finish. Congratulations to all students involved, you should be very proud of yourselves!
I enjoyed participating in the Philosothon, a philosophy competition promoting collaboration and deep thinking. What I found interesting was the opportunity to engage in difficult discussions with others, where we explored complex ideas together. The collaborative aspect allowed me to hear other's perspectives, which increased my understanding of various topics. It was both fun and hard to work as a team. The experience not only further sharpened my collaboration and critical thinking skills but also let me enjoy philosophy in further depth - Kristy Jestadi (4th place- Year 10 Philosopher)
Year 10 Work Experience
Year 10 work experience was carried out over two separate weeks. A total of 84 students were placed in a variety of working environments in local businesses including Let’s Play, The Vines Country Club, Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm and The Margaret River Chocolate Company.
Many positive comments were made by employers in their workplace evaluation noting the excellent behaviour and manners of our students and several students have gained part-time employment because of their work experience placement.
Year 8 Camp
At the end of Term 3, Year 8 students enjoyed an opportunity to connect with their peers during the annual Year 8 Camp at Woodman Point Recreation Camp. From the moment students arrived, they were quickly immersed in a range of exciting activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, beach team building and geocaching. Not only did many of these activities test the students’ courage, but also their ability to work collaboratively in a team.
Despite some changes due to the windy and rainy conditions, the Year 8s showed a great deal of resilience and adaptability in dealing with last minute changes to the program. The whole year group embraced the changes, taking opportunities to spend time with their peers within a different environment.
